In general, the elderly tend
to live with her son who had been married (Rudkin, 1993). The high population
of elderly living with their children showed the strong norm that parents life
is the responsibility of their children. Survey conducted by the Demographic
Institute Faculty of Economics, University of Indonesia (UI LD, 1993) of the
400 people aged 60-69 years, consisting of 329 men and 71 women, showed that
only a few elderly people who live alone (1.5%) , followed by living with
children (3.3%), living with in-law (5.0%), living with husband / wife and
children (29.8%), living with a husband, wife and daughter (19.5% ), and
elderly people living with their partner there is 18.8%. Yulmardi findings
(1995) also showed that elderly people in Sumatra, especially in the outskirts
of the city of Jambi mostly live in extended families. According Rudkin (1993)
of elderly people who live alone generally have lower levels of well-being
compared with the elderly who live with their families.
Family and Community Support
Actually, the elderly are
particularly eager to live in the midst of the family and do not want to be
dipanti nursing. They feel their lives are complete denganadanya children,
grandchildren, and other family members. But families tend to feel bothered by
the elderly.
